Fox renews Empire, without Jussie Smollett’s character
Empire will return for a sixth season, but Jussie Smollett’s character Jamal Lyon won’t feature in it even though the actor’s contract was extended. Fox Entertainment announced on Tuesday (April 30) it renewed the show about a family running a hip-hop record label, but Smollett’s future in it remains uncertain after he was accused of faking being a victim of a racist and homophobic hate crime in Chicago. “By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to Empire,” the studio said in a statement quoted in Reuters, without specifying the reasons for the decision. “Most importantly he is grateful to Fox and Empire leadership, cast, crew and fans for their unwavering support.” — Jussie Smollett’s representatives on the studio decision The actor’s representatives said in a press statement quoted in the Associated Press that Smollett was grateful to the studio and the entire Empire team for their support. “We’ve been told that Jussie will not be on Empire in the beginning of the season but he appreciates they have extended his contract to keep Jamal’s future
