Hey, Maaaaaaary: How Are You Celebrating “2/27” Day?
(source)
Happy 2/27! What a perfect occasion to dredge up only the finest sitcom about a Washington, D.C. apartment complex and the saucy denizens therein. 227 was so ridiculous, so fun, and such a necessary second act for Marla Gibbs. Sure, Jackee was the best thing about the show, but the entire series was a delight up until, say, Countess Vaughn was thrown in as a Cousin Oliver-esque Hail Mary. Here are my favorite clips from the show.
I love when Maaaaary and Sandra end up competing against each other on Wheel of Fortune. It gives Sandra a chance to choose a”M” and claim that her three favorite things begin with that letter: “Money, men, and me.” They’d end up on Family Feud a few years later too, but Sandra’s dalliance with Sajak was always tops for me.
I also love the episode where Mary and Sandra end up on jury duty and Sandra, of course, holds up a verdict with her objections. How isn’t this episode called “Twelve Angry Maaaaaen”?
And of course, I’m obligated to bring up Jackee’s Best Supporting Actress Emmy win because of presenter Bruce Willis‘ infamously terrible pronunciation of her name. It feels like something that would happen in a 227 episode, in fact. The moment is exciting, but it’s annoying that Jackee’s win remains the last time a black actress won in the category.
Now, what’s yours? Happy 2/27!
